Warbirds Over Wanaka - practice day

We bought gold passes for all three days of the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow, arriving around midday afternoon. We missed some of the practice routines because of wandering around the grounds in the hot sun looking at static displays and parked planes - bit of a mistake as the Spitfire and Messerschmidt were up at one point, and they were the top of my list to see.

Sunrise through our bedroom window before we left to drive over to Wanaka

Part of the Packard collection at the entrance. Owners brought cars from as far away as the UK and US. Eight were brought to Wanaka by their American owners; we met two of them on Sunday.

The Frankie Singers offer WW2-style entertainment

Two reenactors from the Warhorses who put on a display of a WW2 encounter during the lunch break; cool wheels, but they must have been hot! The group acted out a true but little-known story of a group of New Zealand soldiers who ambushed German troops in Italy, were then captured themselves, were rescued by Allied troops, then discovered a German payroll and used the money to buy a racehorse that proved to be a winner.

Yak 52 display team

A Harvard from the Roaring Forties display team; photos of them in action on the following two days to come.
