It's Sunday here so I suppose your Saturday is almost over, but I hope you had a happy birthday, jhall1. :-)

Local weather and elections

girl from space

It's a blustery and occasionally wet Sunday as a storm the size of Australia passes over, which means that it's not worth going out to Ardmore for the Battle of Britain air show, dammit. They have the Warbirds (vintage war planes) there and it would have been wonderful in decent weather. We wouldn't be able to see them with the rain and low clouds. :-(

Anyway. We have local elections on across the country and there's a Jedi standing in the Waitemata and Gulf ward. "He is encouraging voters to strike back against dull, traditional candidates and support his policies. These include light sabre-based progress, the formation of a Rebel Alliance against the political clone army and light-speed local infrastructure." :-D Pity it's not my ward or I'd vote for him, but the Orakei guy saying he will fight "council stupidity" among other things will probably get my vote.

A poll on Auckland's mayoral campaign has Bob Parker way out in front, and he's not even standing. He's the mayor of Christchurch who has been so impressive after the earthquake. Auckland would be his if he wanted it, which I doubt. :-)

In praise of Blake

blake big

People have been making posts in praise of Blake, and there's a suggestion that we work our way through the crew after that. I thought I'd go in the order we meet them, so that's Blake, Vila, Jenna, Avon, Gan, Cally, Dayna, Tarrant, and Soolin.

Blake is an idealistic revolutionary, a good and honest man who genuinely cares for his crew of outcasts and criminals. Yes, he does let the cause run away with him at times (e.g. dealing with the Terra Nostra), but it's a damned good cause and one worth fighting for.

Blake’s liking for his crew is returned by them. He treats Vila with respect for his talents, complimenting him on occasion--and in his hearing--and obviously enjoys his humour, returning Vila’s banter with deadpan wit of his own. I love their interaction in "Seek-Locate-Destroy".

With Blake as leader, there was actually a chance they'd win. There was hope and direction. He might get impatient with people sometimes but to me there's no doubt that he gave a damn for them all.

Although I disagreed with his original plan to destroy Star One, I missed him a lot when he left. Big cause, big sleeves, and big heart.

Gold (410)

This isn't that bad for a season 4 episode though it lacks the usual B7 witty dialogue.

I've got a criminal record, you see. - Hasn't everybody?Collapse )
